By Brian Bonnenfant, Center for Regional Studies, University of Nevada, Reno February 8, 2009 Introduction Tucked in the volcanic hills of western Nevada is the largest industrial park in the world.  The park is located in Storey County, approximately 15 miles east of Reno, just across the Truckee River from Interstate 80 that connects Chicago with San Francisco.  The 30,000 developable acres situated on 107,000 acres of high-desert dotted with basalt outcrops and herds of wild Mustangs is the brainchild of a rural county official that became a reality with the help of a strategic investment by two real estate investors.  Around 1994 when western Nevada was just beginning its most recent population boom, a Storey County building inspector envisioned a massive industrial park adjacent to Interstate 80 and the Union Pacific railroad, but isolated from the County’s population centers.  After the State of Nevada provided seed money for infrastructure, the first tenants begin to trickle...
